The insatiable demand of the industrial and developing countries for power is largely met by the carbonaceous fuels group comprising coal, liquid petroleum, and gas. The pattern of fuel usage is continually changing to such an extent that it has become essential for the engineer, technologist and applied scientist to familiarise himself with all kinds of fuels, and with the principles of their use. This volume provides students, and others, with the necessary, broad background. The author, a tutor for many years, adheres to the principle that only a clear understanding of fundamentals can provide the best basis for optimal application of any technology. He sets out here a logical, systematic presentation of the scientific bases of the nature, production, preparation and usage of fuels. Sufficient technology is included to illustrate the application of basic principles without obscuring their fundamental unity. The essential similarity of the physical forms of carbonaceous fuels and their behaviour in use is emphasised.
The book is divided into three main parts. The first provides a general account of the whole field of fuel and power. This is followed by a systematic survey of the occurrence of coals, their nature and properties, and their conversion into the desired secondary fuels. The second part describes the origin, prospecting for, and production and processing of liquid petroleum and natural gas. Secondary products, including fuel and petrochemicals, made from hydrocarbon raw materials are reviewed. This survey of materials leads to the third main part of the book which deals with aspects of the broad topic of energy conversion. A general picture of nuclear plant available for the large-scale generation of power in civil reactors is given. This comprehensive volume will appeal particularly to engineering and applied science students at technical colleges and in technological faculties of universities. Teachers at schools, colleges and universities, and those interested in the educational activities of professional bodies, should be aware of the information presented.
