FOREWORD
The original author of The Romance of St George's will be one of the first to welcome the publication of yet another edition of his book by the Society he served so well in its earlier days.
The need for further revision had become increasingly evident since the end of the war, and whenever St George's looks for volunteers with the necessary equipment of scholarship and literary skill, to say nothing of love for the work which is the first essential, those volunteers are forthcoming. We are intensely grateful but we are not surprised. The longer I remain where I am the more bewitching does the subject appear to me, and the wider the field for further exploration. There are two or three fine examples of the Perpendicular style in this country which may be said to challenge comparison, but for sheer breath-taking loveliness of proportion, line and colour, I maintain that none can excel The Queen's Free Chapel in her Castle at Windsor.
The still increasing company of visitors will be glad of a book to keep the memory fresh and to fill in the gaps in their history—and all at a price which bears little relation to its worth.
Eric Hamilton, Bishop, Dean of Windsor.
