This work is issued as a practical introduction to Polish, a language spoken by about thirty millions of people. The volume contains carefully selected and comprehensive vocabularies, conversational phrases and sentences, such as are wanted daily by tourists, travellers, business men, civil and military officers, and all who require to use the spoken language for the purposes of business or pleasure. By means of Marlborough's well-known and popular system of phonetics, into which the Polish words are transcribed, any English-speaking person can read and speak the words and phrases intelligibly at a glance and so make himself understood without previous acquaintance with the language. A full outline of the Grammar is included and increases both the interest and usefulness of the book. Poland, re-born to political independence from the world convulsion of 1914-18, and to-day the buffer state between Russia and Western Europe, as in the past she was Europe's bulwark against Turkish and Tartar invasion, has acquired a growing political importance since her freedom was declared. Industrially, too, she seems destined to play an increasingly important part in Europe. For this reason the inclusion of a handy manual of the language in Marlborough's familiar Self-Taught Series will no doubt be widely welcomed. While Poland's language is but little known outside its own country, her literature has been widely read and appreciated in England ever since " Quo Vadis ? " made the name of Henryk Sienkiewicz world-famous and brought to our notice his great historical trilogy of " With Fire and Sword," " The Deluge," and " Pan Michael." Other Polish writers whose works have been translated into English are Mme. Orzeszko, Marya Rodziewicz, Kra-szewski, Michael Czajkowski, and Conrad Korzeniowski, the latter the grandfather of our own Joseph Conrad, himself a son of Poland. Finally there is Ladislaw Raymont, a winner of the Nobel peace prize with his great work " The Peasant," the first volume of which, entitled " Autumn," has been recently published in English. Many of these authors were first introduced to the English public by my late father, the Count de Soissons, whose work on the present manual I have completed only in so far as concerns the mechanical duties of conection and proof reading. New students of Poland and of the Polish language, desirous of extending their studies, could not. do better than turn to such translations, which would give them a good view of the immensely rich field which they have to explore.
