The intensifying multilateral cooperation and the increasing number of publications in this field all over the world called for the compilation of a multilingual dictionary of terms frequently used in the field of engineering geology. These are some of the reasons which induced the Permanent Commission for Geology of the Council for Mutual Economic Aid to pass a resolution upon the publishing of a "Terminological dictionary on engineering geology". The delegation of the German Democratic Republic in the Permanent Commission for Geology of the Council for Mutual Economic Aid was entrusted with the leadership in editing the dictionary. This task was carried out by the Central Geological Institute, Berlin, of the State Secretariate for Geology of the German Democratic Republic in cooperation with specialists from the member-countries of the Council for Mutual Economic Aid. Outstanding representatives from the People's Republic of Bulgaria, the Hungarian People's Republic, the German Democratic Republic, the Mongolian People's Republic, the People's Republic of Poland, the Socialist Republic of Romania, the Soviet Union and the Czechoslovacian Socialist Republic took part in compiling the terms. The definitions of terms are given in Russian as the working language of the Council. This, at the same time, means an appreciation of the outstanding size and significance of Soviet literature in the field of engineering geology. After the Russian terms the equivalents in the languages of the member-countries of the Council for Mutual Economic Aid, as well as in English are given. This dictionary is expected to serve for a better mutual understanding in the practical and scientific activities of engineering geologists. It will contribute to higher efficiency in the exchange of experience and the standardized use of terms in the field of engineering geology.
