Opis: Abacus 2004, stan bdb- (podniszczona lekko okładka), str 614+mapy ISBN 0-349-10635-5 The book chronicles the service of the Officers and men of the the Second Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers throughout the Great War. Captain Dunn , its Medical Officer wishing to commemorate the Battalions service after the war decided to enlist contributions from over sixty officers and men , consulting war diaries , letters well as personal contributions from those who served in the Battalions of the regiment , being meticulous in his research , checking every detail prior to publication . Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves as well as Frank Richards were amongst those who served in the battalion and the first two men were instrumental in causing Dunn to write the book in order to counteract what he perceived as half truths in their writings on the war. The book, some 588 pages long tells of the Second Battalions part in the war from mobilisation until 1919. It is a superb chronicle of the lives of its officers and men from a military and social aspect and gives a vivid insight into their lives in billets and trenches on a day by day basis and the conditions under which they fought. The humour of the British troops is shown in full measure as is their courage It also gives an insight into the social divide between officers and men. Amongst it officers was Captain Stockwell, known behind his back as “Buffalo Bill” a colourful character who became a Brigadier General. Frank Richards comments on his capabilities in his usual forthright manner. The whole is a fascinating glimpse not only of the places it was sent on the Western Front and battles it took part in but a huge panorama of the war taking in the French and German side of the conflict. It is richly illustrated with maps and photographs and if you haven’t yet read it I would recommend this addition to your WW1 |
